Last fall I attended the Gentle Teaching International Conference in Troy Michigan. One of the main sponsors of this conference was MORC the Macomb-Oakland Regional Center. Michigan has been a hotbed of Gentle Teaching and has a long history of mentoring by Dr. John McGee.
As can be seen from the conference program there were speakers from across the world. The presentations were great but two videos caught my attention. The opening video with it original song was very moving and a video from a group of presenters from Muskegon Michigan. The Muskegon presentation led by Luke Reynolds was focused on assuring families that, as their sons and daughters left the institution, they would be safe and cared for and they would have a better life. The video’s quality is very good. For those groups still stuggling with closing institutions this could be a helpful video.
I have had the opportunity of presenting in Michigan at The Mount Pleasant Center the last institution to close and before a group of leaders at the Michigan Department of Community Health. We should be thankful for the leadership that MORC and the Michigan Department of Community Health have shown in promoting a Culture of Gentleness.
Next year the Gentle Teaching International conference will be hosted in Skanderborg, Denmark on September 25-26-27, 2012.
